Niesha Neal 
 

Niesha Neal is in the 7th grade and is a first year track member on the varsity girls track team. This week Niesha posted her personal best in all her events and helped the Lady Wolverines defeat Chapman and Landrum in a home track meet.  Niesha finished 4th in the girls varsity 100 meter dash, she posted a 13.90 second sprint, only 7 tenths of a second behind the winner, who was an 11th grader.  She also runs the last leg on the 4x100 team and helped them finish first. Head track coach, Coach Mahaffey, says that he is proud of Niesha’s progress and knows she has a bright future.

Emily Brown 

Emily Brown is an 8th grader and a second year JV soccer player.  Emily has helped the Lady Wolverines compile a record of 9-1; the only loss came against Dorman High School’s JV. Emily has scored 20 goals already this season along with 7 assists. This past week she scored 1 goal and had 2 assists against Newberry. Head coach, Coach Moon, says that she is proud of Emily and her growth.

 Kylie Hitchcock
 Kylie Hitchcock is a 7th grader and a first year player on the JV Softball team. She plays pitcher and first base. She led the team to a victory against region opponent, Mid-Carolina last week. She had a complete game win, striking out 4 and only gave up 1 earned run. In addition, so for in this young season, Kylie has a batting average of .600. Coach Wood says that Kylie is a great asset to the team and she islooking forward to watching her grow in this sport.
Gage Howard
Gage Howard is a 7th grader and a first year member of the Varsity Boys Golf team. In his first career golf match, Gage shot a 43, which was 6 over par to help the team defeat Chapman. Gage also contributed in scoring for the golf team at the Carolina Invitational, one of the biggest golf tournaments in the state. Coach Craig says that Gage has a bright future ahead of him in golf and is a pleasure to coach.

Anthony Gonzalez is in the 8th grade and is a second year player for the JV soccer team.  Anthony has started both years and plays the position of forward or striker. Anthony has 3 goals in the past 2 games for the team and helped the team start out 2-0 in the region. Anthony scored a goal against Clinton and two goals against Newberry. Coach Parham says that Anthony has been named captain of the team and is doing a great job leading the team both on and off the field.

 
haley 

Haley West is a second year player for the Lady Cubs’ basketball team and a starting guard for them. She has helped the team go undefeated in region play this year. Coach Addis says that she is a “shut-down” defender as she always has the job of defending the opponent’s best player. Her fantastic defense had starting helping Haley on offense as her offense output has increased.  She recently scored a season high 9 points in the team’s 21-16 victory over Mabry. Coach Addis adds that he is very proud of Haley in her hustle and leadership.

Tae Goggins is a second year player for the middle school boys’ basketball team. Tae has helped the Wolverine Cubs move up to third place in the Foothills Conference.  Coach Carroll says that the last two games Tae has stepped up his game.  Against Blacksburg, Tae had 11 points, 9 steals, and 7 rebounds to help the Cubs win. Then against Chesnee on Monday, he helped the team win 33-13 after losing to Chesnee the first time earlier in the season. Against Chesnee, Tae had 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Coach Carroll adds that he is proud of Tae’s improvement over the course of the season.

 
Alejandro 

Alejandro Quezada is a second year wrestler for the Woodruff Middle School wrestling team. Alejandro has an individual record of 17-2. He has had two first place finishes:the Broome Invitational and the Area 3 Qualifier. Alejandro also qualified for Upper State.  Head coach, Coach Ramsey, says that as a team captain, Alejandro works hard and leads by example. Coach Ramsey added that Alejandro is truly a joy to coach.

Gabe Ellison

Gabe is a second year wrestler for WMS and a returning state qualifier. Gabe wrestles at the 112 lb class. He is currently 14-1 in individuals.  He finished in 1st place at the Broome Invitational and at the Bojangles Area 3 Qualifier, which means Gabe has already qualified for Upper State. He has scored 13 pins in 14 wins.  Head coach, Coach Ramsey, says that Gabe puts a lot of time and effort into being a good wrester and it shows when he steps on the mat.  Coach adds that he truly represents what it means to be a student-athlete and is very proud of him.

 Gabby Campos

Gabby is a second year player for the Lady Cubs’ basketball team and a starting post player this season. She scored 8 points in the win over Ewing and contributed 12 points in the win over Chesnee. Coach Addis says that Gabby is an incredible athlete and is very coachable. He adds that she has worked hard to improve this year and that improvement is making a big impact for the team this season.  The Lady Cub Wolverines are currently in first place in the Foothills Conference.

 Jailen Tribble

Jailen is a second year player for the WMS boys basketball team. He has helped the team have a good start this year and played a vital role in the two conference victories against Cowpens and Blacksburg to help the Cubs begin conference play 2-0.  Head coach, Coach Carroll, says that Jailen has become a good leader for the team and is playing hard on both sides of the ball to help set the tone for the team.

Jenna Peace 

Jenna is a second year player for the WMS Girls basketball team. She has played a vital role in the team’s success this season with her defense. Head coach, Coach Addis, says that Jenna is a smart, high energy player that plays off great instinct. He adds that she is a shut-down style defensive player and always guards the opposing team’s best player.  Jenna has helped the Lady Wolverine Cubs start out 2-0 in the conference games.

Emily Brown     
        Emily is a 2nd year player on the WMS Volleyball team. She is a backrow setter and a front row hitter. Emily helped the Lady Cubs defeat Mabry this week and helped the Lady Cubs finish 3rd for the season in the Foothills Conference Division One.  For the regular season, Emily had 83 playable serves with 22 of them being aces; she also had multiple games where she served the last 15 points combined to seal the wins.  Coach Tonja Westmoreland says that she has enjoyed watching Emily grow in volleyball over the last two years and cannot wait to see her playing for WHS next season.

 Gabby Campos

Gabby is in the 8th grade and a second year player for the middle school volleyball team.  Gabby has helped the Lady Cubs (currently 3rd in their division) pick up 4 wins. Gabby helped the Lady Wolverine Cubs defeat Blacksburg twice and Chesnee last week.  Gabby is tied with another player leading the team in the most serves total (52) with 15 being Aces. Gabby plays the position of setter and a Front Row hitter on the team.  Coach Tonja Westmoreland says that Gabby has been fun to watch as she has drastically grown in knowledge and skill in a short period of time and has become a leader on the team.

 Tae Goggins

 

Tae is in the 8th grade and a second year football player.  This past week he helped the Wolverine Cubs pick up a big win in a divisional game against Cowpens, winning 50-16.  Tae had two touchdowns himself and had several key blocks for others to score.  He also is the starting cornerback on defense and had multiple tackles. Head Coach Lanford says that Tae is progressing nicely and has helped the team start out 3 - 1.

Haley West

Haley West is a second year player for the volleyball team.  Haley is a middle hitter and defensive specialist on the team. She helped the Lady Wolverine Cubs pick up two wins against Chesnee and Mabry, winning both 3-0.  Haley is one of two players that is leading the team in the most serves total with 41 playable serves; also five of Haley’s serves have been aces. Coach Westmoreland says that Haley’s drive, determination, and leadership skills have made her an outstanding volleyball player.

Mathias Dial  

Mathias is a second year player for the middle school football team. He plays receiver, special teams, and defensive back. This past week he helped the football team defeat Pacolet 20-8.  Mathias had a return punt for a touchdown and he had three catches for 35 yards. Head coach, Coach Lanford, says that Mathias responded well to his coaches challenging him and really stepped up his game to help the Wolverine Cubs defeat Pacolet.
